IAC SOFTBALL: WESSELS LEADS TIOGA TO DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF TRUMANSBURG (11 PHOTOS) (2019-04-22)

TRUMANSBURG "" Sophomore Kindra Wessels starred at the plate and in the pitcher's circle to help Tioga to a doubleheader sweep of Trumansburg here Monday afternoon in IAC Division 2 softball action.

Wessels had five hits and earned the win in the Lady Tigers' 14-4 victory in the first game of the twinbill, then tossed a no-hitter in a 9-0 win in the nightcap.

First Game
Tioga 14, Trumansburg 4

Kindra Wessels banged out five hits to pace Tioga's 16-hit attack in a 14-4 win over Trumansburg in the first game of a doubleheader Monday.

Wessels was 5-for-5 with a triple, four runs scored, there stolen bases, and two RBI, while freshman Austyn Vance doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in three runs, freshman Julia Bellis doubled and singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, and sophomore Olivia Ayres singled twice and drove in a run.

Junior Giovanna Rossi doubled, scored one run, and drove in two runs for the Lady Tigers, while junior Allyson Chapman singled, stole three bases, and scored two runs, junior Michaela Webb singed, stole two bases, and scored two runs, junior Shaina Franks singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, junior Hannah Fox added a single, and sophomore Faith Burrowes scored one run and drove in one run.

Wessels earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out four and walking three in three innings in the pitcher's circle. Chapman closed out the game, allowing three runs - two earned - on three hits, with three strikeouts and two walks in two innings of relief.

Tioga took an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Vance, an RBI single by Ayres, and a bases-loaded walk to Burrowes.

Trumansburg loaded the bases in the home half of the first on a single and two errors, but Wessels recorded a strikeout to escape the jam unscathed.

The Lady Tigers strung together five hits in the second inning to increase its lead. Franks and Wessels each stroked one-out singles, then Vance and Bellis rapped back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 5-0.

Ayres added a single and Burrowes was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a groundout stranded the runners.

Tioga scored two runs in the third inning, then upped its lead to 14-1 with seven runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Second Game
Tioga 9, Trumansburg 0

Tioga, playing as the home team, scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning in support of Kindra Wessels, who tossed a no-hitter, in a 9-0 win in the nightcap of the doubleheader.

Wessels fanned 10 and walked one in a five-inning complete game.

Junior Giovanni Rossi tripled and singled, scored one run, and drove in two runs for the Lady Tigers, while junior Michaela Webb and sophomore Olivia Ayres singled twice, scored one run, and knocked in one run, and junior Kimberly Tarbox singled twice and drove in one run.

Wessels doubled, scored one run, and drove in two runs in the win, while freshmen Julia Bellis and Austyn Vance each singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, Franks doubled and scored one run, and junior Alyson Chapman and sophomore Faith Burrowes each crossed the plate once.

Webb drew a walk to lead off the home half of the first inning, stole second, and moved to third base on a single by Ayres. Wessels provided all the runs she would need with a two-RBI double to the left field gap, and scored on an RBI single by Rossi to push the lead to 3-0.

After a steal of second, Rossi scored on an RBI single by Bellis to extend the lead to 4-0. The Lady Tigers scored the final three runs of the rally on RBI singles by Vance, Webb, and Ayres.

Tioga tacked on a run in the third inning on an RBI triple by Rossi, and in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Tarbox.

Tioga, now 6-3, returns to action Thursday when it hosts Union Springs.
