IAC BASEBALL: WAVERLY THUMPS NEWARK VALLEY IN DIVISIONAL SHOWDOWN (18 PHOTOS) (2019-04-22)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY - Waverly rode nine hits and a dozen balks by Newark Valley pitchers to an 11-1 victory in a crucial IAC Division 3 showdown here Monday. The win moved the Wolverines into first place in the division, a half-game ahead of NV.

"We forced stuff. We hit the ball, we pounded the bases really hard. We forced some mistakes," Waverly head coach Kyle McDuffee said. "Colby, I thought, pitched really well. He hit his spots. He was up, down. He was just hitting the strike zone very well and I was really impressed with him too.

"Right now, we're working on all cylinders and the kids can play ball, and that's what we're doing, we're coming out and playing baseball. We are kids, young, and they're enjoying it. They're enjoying playing.

"We were real flat today," said NV head coach Tim Pisarczyk. "Our fielding just wasn't there, kicked the ball around a little bit, threw the ball around a little bit. We just weren't sharp enough today.

"Waverly has a great team and they came prepared. They made the plays that we just didn't."

Both teams would put two runners on base in each of the first two innings, but neither could score until a pair of balks plated Cole Jenner, who led off the Waverly half of the inning with a double.

A dropped high fly ball in the infield put the Wolverines' Jalen McCarty on base in the third. He would score on a balk, as would Jenner, who had walked. In between, Colby Sindoni singled and scored on a Bradey Roney single, giving the hosts a 4-0 advantage.

In the fourth, Jay Pipher singled, McCarty walked, Montana Davis singled, Stotler walked and Jenner walked. Pipher, McCarty and Stotler scored on balks. An RBI single by Caden Hollywood plated Davis and Joe Tomasso's groundout brought Jenner across to give Waverly a 9-0 cushion.

The Cardinals would get on the scoreboard in the fifth following a Kyle Coffin walk, Mikey Wandell's single, and Joey Woodmansee's RBI single.

The Wolverines responded with a run in their half of the frame as McCarty doubled and scored on a balk. Waverly added the final run in the sixth after Tomasso was hit by a pitch and scored on McCarty's double.

"This was a big win for us," McDuffee said. "Now I think it sits us in first and this is a good time to be in first, going into the last couple games that are left in the division. Our conference is very hard and it's nice to know where we're going to be, and in a week we're going to know that."

Following Monday's games, every team in the six-team division was still mathematically alive for the title - and there is also a potential wild card spot for the IAC playoffs on the line.

While the loss may have bumped Newark Valley out of the top spot in the division, Pisarczyk knows his Cardinals need to maintain a positive focus down the stretch.

"I've been preaching positivity all season," he said. "We try to keep our heads up as much as we can, stay positive as much as we can. The worst thing you can do at this time is get negative. I told the guys after the game, you never think you're as good as you are when you're up and you never think you're as bad as you are when you're down. Stay positive and take it one game at a time, one play at a time, and one pitch at a time."

McCarty was the only player to collect multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and an RBI. Hollywood and Roney were each 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Davis was 1-for-2 with a run. Sindoni, Stotler and Pipher all went 1-for-3 with a run, while Jenner was 1-for-1 with three runs, and Tomasso had a run and RBI.

Riley Malone was 1-for-2 for NV, and Jake Armstrong and Wandell both went 1-for-3. Woodmansee had a hit and RBI, and Coffin a run.

Sindoni earned the win, scattering four hits over six innings while striking out seven. Alex Bartlett threw one inning of relief.

Wandell took the loss, surrendering nine runs (six earned) on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings. He struck out six. Evan Powell went 2 2/3, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks while fanning three.

With the win the Wolverines move to the top of the division at 5-2, one-half game ahead of NV (5-3). Notre Dame (4-3) trails by one game and Dryden (3-3) is 1 1/2 back.
