NTL SOFTBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY RIDES BIG INNING TO 18-0 WIN OVER SAYRE (2019-04-23)

SAYRE "” Cowanesque Valley erupted for 11 runs in the third inning en route to an 18-0 four-inning win over Sayre here Tuesday afternoon in NTL Small School softball action.

The Lady Indians took a quick 3-0 lead, scoring three runs with two outs in the top of the first inning. Makayla Vargeson smacked a two-run triple for CV's first runs of the game, and scored on an RBI double by Haley Murphy.

CV's Ashleigh Southard pitched around a one-out single by junior Madeleine Dutra - Sayre's only hit of the game - in the bottom of the second inning, then the Lady Indians put the game out of reach in the top of the third inning.

The 11-run rally featured a pair of RBI singles by Abby Ackley, and a two-run double by Southard.

Ackley led CV with three hits, four runs scored and four RBI, and Vargeson also collected four RBI.

Southard earned the win with two innings of one-hit ball. She struck out two and walked none.

Vargeson retired all six batters she faced in two innings of perfect relief.

Sophomore Allyssa Murrelle was tagged with the loss. She allowed four earned runs in 2 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking three. Sophomore Sara Ciavardini pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, allowing two earned runs with one strikeout.

Sayre, now 0-8, returns to action Thursday at Athens.
