NTL JV BASEBALL: ATHENS RIDES BIG FIRST INNING TO 16-1 WIN OVER SAYRE (2024-04-19)

ATHENS — Athens pushed 10 runs across the plate in the bottom of the first inning on its way to a 16-1 four-inning win over Sayre here Wednesday in NTL junior varsity action.

The junior Wildcats scored their first two runs on an error, and their third run on a wild pitch, before Zac Fisher’s RBI single made it 4-0.

After another error made it 5-0, Noah Hobday stroked a two-RBI single to extend the lead to 7-0. Athens scored its next two runs on bases-loaded walks to Kamdyn Wheeler and Brady Flynn, and Aiden Vanderpool capped the rally with an RBI single.

The Redskins scored its only run on a wild pitch in the third inning on a lead-off single by Ryne Osmond, who later scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-1.

Athens invoked the 15-run mercy rule with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Wildcats scored the first two runs on bases-loaded walks to Fisher and Alex McQuay, then Duncan Thetga stroked a two-run single to make it 15-1.

The game ended on a Sayre error that made it 16-1.

Fisher singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, and Noah Hobday and Thetga each singled, scored one run, and knocked in two runs to pace Athens at the plate, while McQuay singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and Vanderpool singled, scored once, and had one RBI.

Karson Sipley singled and scored two runs in the win, while Wheeler had two RBI, and scored two runs, Eli Hobday scored two runs, Flynn scored one run, and drove in one run, and Colin Congdon, and Brenden Cooke each crossed the plate once.

Cooke earned the win, striking out four and walking one in two innings of no-hit ball, while Flynn allowed an unearned run on one hit, while striking out two and walking none.

Athens improves to 2-1 on the season.
