IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY ROLLS IN 70-10 ROUT OF LANSING (2019-01-08)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY - Waverly scored the first 15 points of the game, then used a 22-0 first-half run to take a commanding 35-point second-quarter lead en route to a 70-10 route of Lansing here Tuesday night in IAC Large School basketball action.
Sophomore Sidney Tomasso scored six points, and senior Alex Tomasso converted an old-fashioned three-point play to help Waverly to an 11-0 lead, then seniors Lauren Newman and Wendi Hammond capped the run with back-to-back buckets to make it 15-0 with 4:54 remaining in the first quarter.
With the scored at 17-4 with 4:06 remaining in the first quarter, Waverly began its decisive run on a bucket by sophomore Gianni Picco less than a minute later.
With 49 seconds remaining, exchange student Natalia Urrejola gave Waverly a 22-4 lead it carried into the second quarter.
Over the next three minutes, Alex Tomasso scored six points, Newman and junior Paige Lewis scored four points apiece, and Sidney Tomasso canned a 3-pointer to make it 39-4 with 5:00 remaining in the half.
After a bucket by Lansing with 3:43 left in the first half, Waverly scored the next 20 points, The Lady Wolverines scored the final five points of the first half, then outscored the Lady Bobcats 13-0 in the third quarter, to take a 57-6 lead into the final eight minutes.
Alex Tomasso led three Lady Wolverines in double-figures with 16 points, while Sidney Tomasso had 15 points, and Urrejola added a career-high 11 points.
Lewis had eight points in the win, while Newman scored six points, and Hammond and Sabrina Pierce chipped in with four points apiece.
Waverly, now 10-0, returns to action Friday with a road game at Dryden.
