IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: SOUTHERN CAYUGA RIDES STRONG FIRST HALF TO 65-44 WIN OVER TIOGA (2019-01-08)
Valley Sports ReportPOPLAR RIDGE, N.Y. - Southern Cayuga raced out to a 19-point halftime lead and cruised to a 65-44 win over Tioga here Tuesday night in IAC Small School basketball action.
Katie Kopp scored nine points in the first quarter to fuel a 19-10 first-quarter spurt, aided by Tioga's performance at the free-throw line. Sophomore Eve Wood knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points, and junior Giovanna Rossi scored four points, but the Lady Tigers made just 1 of 8 free-throw attempts.
Senior Rebekah Richter scored four points in the second quarter, and Wood canned another 3-pointers, but the Lady Chiefs used a 19-9 run, fueled by seven points from Lauren Sherman, to take a 38-19 lead at the intermission.
Richter scored four points, junior Chloe Bellis knocked down a 3-pointer and scored four points, and Rossi drained a trey in the third quarter, but Southern Cayuga matched their effort to take a 53-34 lead entering the final eight minutes.
Koop, who pumped in a game-high 22 points, scored seven points in the final stanza to help seal the win.
Rossi led Tioga with 13 points, eight rebounds, and four steals, while Richter had 10 points, three rebounds and one block, and Wood scored 10 points.
Chloe Bellis had four points, five steals, and one blocked shot for the Lady Tigers, and freshman Julia Bellis chipped in with four points
Tioga turned the ball over 26 times in the loss, and shot just 33 percent (16 of 48) from the field.
Tioga, now 2-9, hosts Union Springs Friday night.
