NTL JV BOYS BASKETBALL: WELLSBORO RALLIES TO BEAT SAYRE, 48-46, IN FINAL SECONDS (2019-01-10)
Valley Sports ReportSAYRE - Sayre led by eight points early in the fourth quarter, but Wellsboro rode an 11-0 run to the lead, winning a 48-46 decision in the closing seconds here Wednesday evening in NTL junior varsity boys basketball action.
Brayden Horton scored the first five points of the game to help Sayre to a 10-1 lead midway through the first quarter.
Wellsboro scored seven straight points to close the gap to 10-8, but Matt Lane drained a 3-pointer, and Horton, off a Lane feed, closed the quarter with a bucket to give the junior Redskins a 15-8 lead.
Sayre stretched its lead to 11 points, at 21-10, on back-to-back buckets by Horton and Lane midway through the second quarter. After Wellsboro trimmed the lead to 21-14, Lane answered with a 3-point with 2 1/2 minutes left in the half.
Wellsboro closed the gap to four points, at 26-22, at the half with an 8-2 spurt, but Sayre answered with a 7-0 run on buckets by Zach Belles and Horton, and a 3-pointer by Donnie Abrams.
Wellsboro trimmed the gap to six points, but Donovan Wynn scored in the final seconds of the third quarter to give Sayre a 39-31 lead.
Wynn scored again to make it 41-33 with 7 minutes remaining in the game, but the junior Green Hornets scored the next 11 points to take a 44-41 lead with 2 minutes left.
Lane snapped the run with a steal and lay-up to trim the deficit to 44-33, but Wellsboro answered with a bucket.
After a free throw by Belles trimmed the gap to 46-44, Belles tied the game with an offensive putback with 30 seconds remaining.
After forcing a Wellsboro turnover, Sayre missed two shots at the lead, before Wellsboro rebounded and was fouled.
On the line with 4 seconds remaining, Wellsboro missed, but Liam Manning rebounded for the Hornets and scored with 4 seconds remaining.
Sayre's last-gasp shot at the buzzer was off-the-mark.
Horton led Sayre with 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals, while Lane had 10 points, four steals, and three assists, and Belles had seven points and five rebounds.
Abrams and Wynn each had six points and five boards for Sayre, and Dylan Watkins had five boards and one blocked shot.
Sayre returns to action Friday at Troy.
