NTL JV BOYS BASKETBALL: ATHENS HOLDS OFF NORTH PENN-MANSFIELD, 54-49 (2019-02-06)

ATHENS - Athens used a strong middle two quarters to take the lead, then made enough free throws down the stretch to top North Penn-Mansfield, 54-49, here Tuesday night in NTL Large School Division junior varsity boys basketball action.

NP-M led 14-11 after the first eight minutes, despite four points apiece for J.J. Babcock and Griffen Stein, and an old-fashioned three-point play by Tucker Brown.

Babcock started the second quarter out with a conventional three-point play, and capped with a long-range 3-pointer in a 10-point quarter that field a 16-9 Athens run that gave the Wildcats a 27-25 lead at the half.

Stein scored seven points in the third quarter, while Brown added four points, and Jonathan Smith knocked down a 3-pointer to help the junior Wildcats stretch their lead to 43-33 heading into the final eight minutes.

The junior Tigers found the range in the fourth quarter, but Athens made 5 of 9 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Babcock led Athens with 19 points, while Stein scored 15, Brown had seven points, Aidan Westbrook added six points, and Trevor Brown chipped in with four points.

Curtis Craig and Dominic Garvenick led NP-M with 12 points apiece.

Athens returns to action Thursday at Towanda.
