IAC JV BOYS BASKETBALL: TIOGA RALLY FALLS SHORT IN LOSS TO MARATHON (24 PHOTOS) (2019-02-06)
Valley Sports ReportTIOGA CENTER - Tioga rallied to take the lead midway through the fourth quarter, but Marathon scored the final 10 points of the game for a 42-33 win here Tuesday night in IAC Small School junior varsity boys basketball action.
Marathon led 12-7 after the first quarter, and 21-13 at the half, despite eight points from Tioga's Cobe Whitmore.
Marathon maintained its lead, and took a 30-22 lead into the final eight minutes, but the junior Tigers opened the final stanza with an 11-2 run to take a 33-32 lead with 4:05 remaining in the game.
Gavin Godfrey knocked down a mid-range jumper and a 3-pointer to get Tioga started in the final stanza, and Matt Watson added a bucket in the low blocks to pull Tioga within three points at 32-29.
Casey Stoughton drained a 3-pointer from the corner with 4:30 remaining in the contest to tie the game at 32-32, and Josh Reis made a free throw moments later to give the junior Tigers a 33-32 lead.
Tioga's next two possessions ended in turnovers, resulting in back-to-back breakaway lay-ups to give Marathon a 36-33 lead.
The junior Olympians made 4 of 6 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Whitmore led Tioga with 11 points, while Godfrey had nine points, and Isaac Peterson added five points.
Braeden Morrison led Marathon with 21 points and Connor Holland added 14.
Tioga finishes up the 2018-19 season with a 5-15 record.
