IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: STRONG FIRST HALF CARRIES CHENANGO FORKS TO 66-54 WIN OVER WAVERLY (2019-02-07)

BINGHAMTON - Chenango Forks built a 14-point halftime cushion, and withstood a second-half rally to top Waverly 66-54 here Thursday night in non-league boys basketball action.

Aidan Ackerson knocked down two 3-pointers and scored 10 points in the first quarter to help the Blue Devils to an 18-12 lead after the first eight minutes. Waverly senior Dylan Ward also drained a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points in the opening stanza.

Bryan Haskell scored six points in the second quarter and Loop Haqq added four points to fuel an 18-10 run that pushed the Forks advantage to 36-22 at the half.

Ward, who had 10 points in the first half, erupted for 16 points in the third quarter, but Haqq scored eight points, and Stephen Shepard added five points as the Blue Devils added to their advantage, taking a 55-38 lead into the final eight minutes.

Junior Elijah Kraft canned a 3-pointer and scored seven points in the fourth quarter, and sophomore Ryan Lambert added a 3-pointer, but the Wolverine rally came up well short.

Ward led Waverly with 26 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, 10 rebounds, four steals, and three blocked shots, while Kraft had nine points and three boards, Lambert added six points on a pair of 3-pointers, junior Trevor Morse chipped in with four points and three rebounds, and freshman Caden Hollywood contributed three boards, three steals, and two assists.

Haqq led Forks with 16 points, while Ackerson had 13 points, and Haskell added 12.

Waverly, now 6-12, returns to action Saturday when it hosts Cortland.
