IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: ITHACA HANDS WAVERLY FIRST LOSS OF SEASON, 63-60 (2019-02-08)
Valley Sports ReportITHACA - Georgia Haverlock knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:16 remaining in the game to give Class AA Ithaca the lead for good in a 63-60 win over previously-unbeaten Waverly here Friday night in non-league Section IV girls basketball action.
Sophomore Sidney Tomasso had the hot hand early for the Lady Wolverines, scoring 11 points in the first quarter, while senior Alex Tomasso had five points, and junior Paige Lewis canned a 3-pointer to help Waverly to a 19-15 lead after the first eight minutes.
Sidney Tomasso scored seven more points in the second quarter, including her second 3-pointer of the game, but Ithaca closed the gap to two points, at 32-30, at the halftime intermission.
Ithaca edged ahead 44-43 heading into the final eight minutes, which was a back-and-forth affair until Haverlock's 3-pointer. Waverly's last lead, at 53-52, came on a bucket by Senior Lauren Newman with 3 minutes remaining in the contest.
Newman scored six points in the fourth quarter, while Alex Tomasso and senior Wendi Hammond each had four, but Sidonie Lazarus had nine points and Haverlock added six for Ithaca, which made 8 of 12 free-throw attempts down the stretch to seal the victory.
Sidney Tomasso led Waverly with 18 points - all in the first half, while Alex Tomasso scored 16 points, Lewis had 12 points, Newman added six points, and Hammond chipped in with five.
Haverlock led Ithaca with 17 points, while Graceann Gorky scored 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, Jamie Lusda added 12 points, and Lazarus chipped in with 11 points.
Waverly, now 18-1, closes out the regular season Tuesday when it hosts Johnson City.
