NEWARK VALLEY — Sophomore Derrick Gage did not allow a hit in six innings of work, and junior Thomas Cook finished off the no-hitter to lift Tioga to a 3-0 win over Newark Valley here Friday afternoon in IAC non-divisional baseball action.
Gage fanned 11 and walked four to earn the win, and Cook retired the side in order with one strikeout in the seventh to pick up the save.
Tioga loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second on a single by Cook and walks to seniors Derrick Barto and Christian Weaver, but NV freshman Mikey Wandell registered a pair of strikeouts to escape the jam unscathed.
Wandell matched zeroes on the scoreboard with Gage until the fifth inning.
Senior Pierce Hendershot was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Mason Booser. Hendershot scored moments later on a wild pitch to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Senior John Worthing re-ignited the rally by working a walk, stealing second, and scoring on a throwing error to make it 2-0.
John Worthing knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to extend its lead to 3-0.
Cook stroked a pair of singles, while Brady Worthing singled, and Booser singled and scored one run to account for Tioga’s four hits. John Worthing drove in one run, and Hendershot scored one run.
Wandell was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs — two earned — on four hits. He struck out 10 and walked four. Kyle Coffin allowed one walk in a scoreless inning of relief.
Tioga, now 12-4, wraps up regular-season play at O-M / Watkins Glen.
