NTL BASEBALL: ESPOSITO SHINES IN SAYRE'S 7-1 WIN OVER BLUE RIDGE (2019-05-16)

NEW MILFORD, Pa. - Senior James Esposito starred on the mound, and at the plate to lead Sayre to a 7-1 win over Blue Ridge here Thursday afternoon in non-league baseball action.

With the win, the Redskins improve to 10-8 and guarantees themselves a winning record, and a spot in the upcoming District 4, Class AA playoffs.

Esposito tossed a complete game to earn the win, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out four and walking one. He threw just 79 pitches in seven innings.

Esposito also had three hits, including a double, scored one run, and had four RBI to pace Sayre's 10-hit attack, while junior Quinn Hanafin singled and scored three runs, freshman Brayden Horton tripled and drove in two runs, and senior Jon Cron singled and drove in one run.

Junior Camden Wheeler and freshman Mason Houseknecht each singled and scored one run for the Redskins, while junior Isaiah Firestine and sophomore Zach Moore each added a single, and freshman David Northrup scored one run.

In the first inning, Wheeler singled with one out, and Hanafin reach on an error. Both runners scored on a booming two-run triple by Horton. Houseknecht, a courtesy runner for Horton, scored on an RBI double by Esposito to make it 3-0.

Blue Ridge parlayed three singles into a run in the home half of the first to trim the deficit to 3-1, but managed just two hits off Esposito over the final six innings.

Cron stroked a two-out RBI singe in the top of the third inning to give the Redskins a 4-1 lead, and Esposito ripped a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning to make it 6-1.

Esposito added a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning to provide the final margin.

Sayre wraps up regular-season play Saturday afternoon, and can clinch the NTL Small School title with a win over NEB. Game time is 2 p.m.
