VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: WAVERLY'S CHANDLER REPEATS AS BOYS TRACK & FIELD 'ATHLETE OF THE YEAR' — WAVERLY'S JOHNSON, ATHENS RELAY ALSO EARN TOP HONORS (2019-06-14)

THE VALLEY "” Waverly junior Isaac Chandler won a bronze medal in the pole vault at States, and repeats as the Valley Sports Report Boys Track & Field "Athlete of the Year."

Waverly 7th-grader Ralph Johnson is the 2019 "Newcomer of the Year," and the Athens 400-meter relay - junior Damian Hudson, sophomore Benny Gambrell, senior Zach Trasco, and freshman Shayne Reid - is the "Relay of the Year.

At States, Chandler finished third in the pole vault at 14-feet, 6-inches, and was eighth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.52 seconds.

At the IAC Championships, Chandler won pole vault with personal-best vault of 14-feet, 9-inches. He also won the 110- and 400-meter hurdles, and ran on the fourth-place 400-meter relay team.

At Class B, Chandler won 110-meter hurdles in school-record time of 14.87 seconds, and also won the pole vault

At the State Qualifier, Chandler won the pole vault and finished eighth in hurdles, after falling in the finals.

The Athens foursome of Hudson, Gambrell, Trasco, and Reid won the 400-meter relay in a time of 44.46 seconds, then finished fifth  in 44.53 seconds at the District 4 Championships.

At the IAC Championships, Johnson finished sixth in the 200-meter dash, and seventh in 100-meter dash. He also ran on the fourth-place 400-meter relay team.

At the Class B Championships, Johnson finished fourth in the 100- and 200-yard sprints.

Damian Hudson, junior, Athens: Hudson put together a strong two-day performance at the District 4 Championships to qualify for States in two events.

At the NTL Championships, Hudson won the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, and also ran on the winning 400-meter relay.

At Districts, Hudson won the 100 and 200, and also ran on the fifth-place 400-meter relay team. At States, Hudson finished 20th in the 200, and 29th in the 100.

Benny Gambrell, sophomore, Athens: Gambrell made four trips to the podium at the District 4 Championships, and qualified for States in the long jump.

Gambrell finished second in the long jump to punch his ticket to States, where he finished 17th. He also finished fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the 200-meter dash, and ran on the fifth-place 400-meter relay.

At the NTL Championships, Gambrell won the long jump and triple jump, and ran on the winning 400-meter relay team.

Collin Wright, sophomore, Waverly: Wright broke a a pair of school records in the postseason, and qualified for States in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

At the IAC Championships, Wright won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a school-record time of 10:02.85, which he would later break again. He also won the 3,200-meter run, and ran on second-place 3,200-meter relay

At the Class B Championships, Wright finished second in the 3,200-meter run in school-record time of 9:52.02, and ran on wining 3,200-meter relay.

At the State Qualifier, Wright won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in school-record time of 9:53.71 to advance to States, where he finished 12th. Wright also finished eighth in the 3,200-meter run at the State Qualifier, and ran on the eighth-place 3,200-meter relay.

 Dylan Ward, senior, Waverly: Ward had the most surprising run to States this spring, churning out a school-record time of 1:57.45 to win the 800-meter run at the State Qualifier. He finished 33rd at States in 2:03.44.

Ward finished eighth in the high jump at the State Qualifier, and also ran on eighth-place 3,200-meter relay.

At the Class B Championships, Ward ran on winning 3,200-meter relay and the third-place 1,600-meter relay.

Caden Wheeler, sophomore, Waverly: A consistent points-winner during the regular season, Wheeler had a number of trips to the podium during the postseason.

At the IAC Championships, Wheeler finished fourth in the long jump, and seventh in the 100-meter dash.

Wheeler won the long jump at the Class B Championships, and finished seventh in the 100. He finished sixth in the long jump at the State Qualifier.

Zach Trasco, senior, Athens: A consistent points-winner all season, Trasco made a number of trips to the podium in the postseason.

At the NTL Championships, Trasco finished fifth in the high jump, and ran on winning 400- and 1,600-meter relays.

At the District 4 Championships, Trasco finished 10th in the high jump, and ran on the fifth-place 400-meter relay.
