DISTRICT 6 LITTLE LEAGUE (MAJORS): HORNELL HOLDS OFF, ELIMINATES WAVERLY WITH 6-4 WIN (2019-07-06)

Valley Sports Report
HORNELL - Fourth-seed Hornell scored three runs in the home half of the first inning, and never trailed in a 6-4 win over fifth-seed Waverly here Saturday morning in the quarterfinals of the District 6 Little League Majors Division playoffs.

Trailing 3-0, Waverly trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Andrew Larrabee walked with one out, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single by Kohen Hugo, who took third on an overthrow and later scored on a wild pitch.

Waverly loaded the bases on walks to Ben Shaw and Peyton Robinson, and a two-out single by Lincoln Sharpsteen, but stranded all three runners.

Hornell took advantage of a pair of Waverly errors in the fourth inning to score three more runs for a 6-2 lead.

Shaw's two-run single in the top of the sixth plated Larrabee and Jerry Carnrike to close the gap to 6-4, but that was as all the damage Waverly would do.

Shaw singled and drove in two runs, and Hugo singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, while Sharpsteen and Aiden Doherty each singled to account for Waverly's four hits. Larrabee scored two runs, and Carnrike crossed the plate once for Waverly.

Doherty allowed a pair of unearned runs on one hit and two walks in one inning of relief, and Hugo had the best turn on the mound for Waverly, striking out one and walking two in a scoreless inning of relief.

Kadyn Whitney was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on three hits, while striking out five and walking six in three innings.
