ATHENS — Matthias Welles turned in a strong performance on the mound, and at the plate to lead Athens to an 8-2 win over Endless Mountains in pool play action of the District 15 Little League 11U baseball playoffs.
Athens took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a bases-loaded hit batsman to force home a run, and a wild pitch.
Karson Sipley stroked a one-out RBI single in the second inning to make it 3-0, and Welles followed that up with a two-run double to extend the lead to 5-0.
After Endless Mountains got on the board in the top of the fourth, Athens answered with a pair of unearned runs — one scoring on a dropped third strike, and the other on a wild pitch — to push its lead to 7-1.
James Friend singled home a run in the fifth inning to make it 8-1.
Welles had three hits, including a double, scored two runs, and had two RBI, while Sipley singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and Cooper Robinson doubled and singled, and scored two runs to pace Athens’ eight-hit attack.
Friend singled, scored one run, and drove in one run for Athens while Alex Arcesi scored on run, and Charan Venkataswamy and Cylus Lantz each drove in one run.
Welles earned the win on the mound, striking out seven in three perfect innings of work. Robinson allowed one run on three hits, while striking out four and walking none in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
With the win, Athens improves to 3-0 in pool play, and will finish pool play at Tunkhannock — also 3-0 — Monday. Athens has outscored its three foes 31-3, while Tunkhannock has outscored the same three teams 46-15, including a 14-13 win over Endless Mountains.
