ELMIRA — The Waverly Little League 8U travel team completed a perfect season Sunday with an 11-9 win over West Elmira in the championship game of the West Elmira 8U Tournament.
With the win, Waverly captured its third tournament title of the summer, and finished with a 15-0 record.
Waverly scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to snap a tie, and take a 10-7 lead.
Waverly took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first inning on a lead-off single by Cooper Hugo, a double by Brayden Bowman, and singles by Axel Murray and Brody Lambert.
West Elmira responded with two runs in the top of the second inning, but Cooper Hugo’s second single of the game tied it at 2-2.
West Elmira scored five times in the top of the third inning to take a 7-2 lead, but Waverly took advantage of five WE errors and a double by Murray to answer for five runs to tie the game at 7-7.
Waverly broke the tie with three runs in the fourth — without the benefit of a hit, and tacked on another unearned run in the fifth to provide the final margin.
Murray doubled and singled and scored two runs, and Cooper Hugo singled twice and scored one run to pace Waverly at the plate, while Brayden Bowman doubled and scored one run, Lambert singled and scored one run, Cooper Skovira scored three runs, and Avery Bowman, Jax Myers, and Kenson Hugo each crossed the plate once.
