NTL GOLF: DEFENDING CHAMP WELLSBORO WINS OPENING MATCH OF 2019 — SAYRE FINISHES FOURTH (24 PHOTOS) (2019-08-20)

WAVERLY - The 2019 NTL golf season began in much the same fashion as the 2018 campaign ended, with the defending league and District 4 champion Wellsboro atop the standings here Tuesday afternoon at the Club at Shepard Hills.

The Green Hornets, led by Ty Morral and Joe Propheta, who finished second and third, respectively in the individual standings, shot a four-man aggregate score of 334 to easily top runner-up North Penn-Mansfield, which shot a 373, and third-place Cowanesque Valley, which tallied a 382.

Sayre finished fourth with a 408, while Towanda was fifth with a 409, and Athens was sixth at 442.

Tioga (N.Y.) senior Sam Taylor earned low-medal honors with a 74, while Morral and Propheta shot 75 and 78, respectively.

Sayre senior Gavin Blair shot an 89 to finish eighth, and Sayre sophomore Kannon VanDuzer carded a 92 to finish 11th. Sophomore Dylan Seck added a 108 for the Redskins, and freshman Colton Watkins tacked on a 119.

Seniors Brady Smith and Travis Jayne each shot rounds of 107 to tie for 21st and pace the Wildcat efforts, while junior Kyler Setzer carded a 113, and freshman Cameron Sullivan had a 115. Junior Carter Jones and freshman Carson Smith tacked on non-scoring rounds of 116 and 121, respectively, for Athens.

The NTL golfers return to action Aug. 29 at the Towanda Country Club.
