ATHENS — Seven different players found the net for Athens, including senior goalkeeper Joel Maslin, in an 11-1 win over North Penn-Liberty here Saturday morning in NTL boys soccer action at Alumni Stadium.
Senior Aaron Lane netted a hat trick, and senior Jesse Sumner and junior Tyler Chambers scored two goals apiece to pace the Wildcat attack, while senior defenseman Matt Nowacoski dished out three assists.
Sumner, off a feed from Nowacoski, scored about three minutes into the game to give Athens a 1-0 lead, but the NP-L defense held the ‘Cats in check for the next 26 minutes.
With 11:03 remaining in the first half, Lane, also off a feed from Nowacoski, made it 2-0. About four minutes later, Chambers scored the first of two goals in a four-minute span that made it 4-0 at the half. Junior Benny Gambrell and senior David Scheftic were credited with assists on Chambers’ goals.
Lane scored 49 seconds after the intermission, off an assist from senior Alex Rowe, then Rowe scored an unassisted goal 4 1/2 minutes later to make it 6-0.
Gambrell, off Nowacoski’s third assist of the game, scored 90 seconds later to extend the lead to 7-0, and Sumner followed with a goal, off an assist from Colby Blakeman, to make it 8-0 with 25:35 remaining in the contest.
After NPL got on the board on a penalty kick with 24:50 remaining, senior Luke Arnold, with an assist credited to Chambers, and Lane scored to make it 10-1 with 16:33 left in the game.
Maslin capped the scoring with a penalty kick with 8:08 remaining in the contest.
Athens had a 37-1 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
Athens, now 2-0, returns to action Monday in a non-league tilt at Maine-Endwell. Game time is 5 p.m.
