Valley Sports ReportSAYRE "" Sayre scored four goals in an 8 1/2-minute span, including a hat trick by junior Cody VanBenthuysen, in the first half to take a commanding 4-1 lead en route to a 6-2 win over Towanda here Monday evening in NTL boys soccer action.
"We started slow, but our offense made some good runs and our passing was good in the first half," said Sayre coach Greg Hughey.
"Our defense played well tonight and filled some of the void of losing Connor Young Saturday.
"We got a little sloppy in the second half, and didn't seem as focused and disciplined," added Hughey. "Overall, I'm happy about getting our first win, but we've got lots of work to do."
With 21:14 remaining in the first half, VanBenthuysen broke a scoreless tie.
With 18:29 left, freshman Brayden Post made it 2-0, and VanBenthuysen found the back of the net again 37 seconds later to make it 3-0.
Just 17 seconds later, Cody Griffin put Towanda on the board to trim the deficit to 3-1.
VanBenthuysen finished off his hat trick with 12:32 remaining to up the Sayre lead to 4-1.
Will Trump scored his first varsity goal for the Redskins with 3:31 left in the first half to increase the Sayre advantage to 5-1 at the intermission.
Sophomore Mason Hughey, who also had two assists, scored Sayre's lone goal of the second half with 36:49 remaining in the contest.
Dan Wright put the finishing touches on the scoring for Towanda midway through the second half.
Sayre had a 19-9 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
Trevor Campbell recorded seven saves in net for Sayre.
The Redskins, now 1-3-1, host Wellsboro Wednesday.
