YOUTH FOOTBALL: ATHENS BLANKS WAVERLY IN 'A' GAME; WAVERLY WINS 'B' AND 'C' CONTESTS (24 PHOTOS) (2019-09-18)

ATHENS "” Athens rolled to a big win in the "A game, but Waverly won the "B and "C" games here Sunday in Northern Tier Youth Football League action at Alumni Stadium.

"A" Game (5th- & 6th-grade)
Athens 28,  Waverly 0 

Matthias Wells scored two on two touchdown runs, and Coper Robinson added another TD run to lead Athens to a 28-0 win over Waverly in the "A" game.

Ben Shaw completed 9 of 12 passes for 70 yards. Austin Burns led Waverly on defense.

"B" Game (3rd- & 4th-grade) 
Waverly 12, Athens 0

Avery Bowman and Jeremy Cleveland scored on TD runs to pace Waverly in a 12-0 win over Athens in the "B" game.

Bowman scored on a 38-yard TD run to start the second quarter for a 6-0 lead. Cleveland scored on a 17-yard TD run at the end of the third quarter to provide the final score.

Brycen Fiske led Waverly with 70 rushing yards rushing, while Bowman had 62 yards and Cleveland added 48 yards.

The Waverly defense was led by Connor Bentley, Griffin Walter, Cleveland and Axel Murray, who also had a fumble recovery.

"C" Game (1st- & 2nd-grade)
Waverly 26, Athens 24 

Offense ruled the day in the "C" game, with Waverly pulling out a 26-24 win.

Waverly's Brayden Bowman scored on a 67-yard TD run for the only score of the first quarter.

Athens' Jacob McBride scored on a 7-yard TD run to start the second quarter to tie the game at 6-6.
 
Logan Shand scored on a 31-yard TD to give Athens a 12-6 lead, but Bowman would break loose on a 53-yard TD run to tie the game at 12-12 at the half.

McBride opened the third quarter with a 60-yard TD run to give Athens the lead again at 18-12, but Bowman would once again answer with a 14-yard TD run. Eli Keeney added the extra point to give Waverly a 19-18 lead.

Athens regained the lead on a 60-yard TD run by Shand, and took a 24-19 lead into the fourth quarter.

Bowman closed out the scoring on a 47-yard TD run, and Mason Phillips added the extra point for the final margin.

The Waverly defense was led by Bowman, Keeney and Grant Spiegel.

FLAG GAME 
Waverly and Athens each scored several touchdowns. Dallas Harbst, Blake Bentley and Zi'ran Thomas scored touchdowns for Waverly.

Waverly will play host to Canton Sunday and Jagger Roberts-Wright will be honored before the "B" Game with his jersey No. 49 being retired.
