NEWFIELD "” Tioga had four different players find the scoring column, and scored a pair of goals in a two-minute span midway through the second half to sew up a 5-2 win over Newfield here Wednesday afternoon in IAC girls soccer action.

With the win, the Lady Tigers improve to 2-4, after winning one game last year.

Despite scoring a season-high five goals, Tioga coach Jim Walsh said the Tioga defense was the difference.

"Tonight was a nice win," he said. "We really focused on stopping their freshman forward Renee Bickham, who surprised us last year with three goals in their victory over us on this field

"Central defender Cassie Birney finally had the game I've been waiting for from her," noted Walsh. "She made some key individual stops versus Bickham and directed the back four throughout most of the game.

"Offensively, we were able to get our midfielders involved, led by Abagail Foley, who blasted two deep shots into the goal, and Madison Howey, who also had a long goal, along with a nice assist.

Junior Jenna Smolinksy put Tioga on the board in the 15th minute, firing off a shot through traffic to the far post as she was being hit by a defender.

About 2 1/2 minutes later, junior Madison Howey lofted a high line-drive off a direct kick that snuck under the crossbar and into the net to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead 23:11 remaining in the first half.

Bickham collected a rebound in traffic with 7:52 left in the first half and deposited it into the back of the to trim the deficit to 2-1.

About 3 1/2 minutes later, senior Jocelyn Bradley slid a through-ball to senior Mackenzie Macumber, who dribbled it deep into the box. She was knocked off-balance at point-blank range, but was able to poke the ball away from the Newfield keeper, and sophomore Abagail Foley punched it into the net to extend the lead to 3-1.

In the third minute of the second half, Jenna Goodwin lit up the scoreboard again for the Lady Trojans, collecting a rebound and knocking it past Tioga keeper Gabrielle Foley, who stopped a pair of shots in the flurry.

About 10 minutes later, Abagail Foley drove a shot from 30 yards out into the back of the net to give the Lady Tigers a 4-2 lead.

Slightly more than two minutes later, Howey ripped a hard shot that Amici stopped but couldn't control. Junior Destini Sweet was on the spot, and punched a shot into the net to make it 5-2.

Tioga had a 10-7 edge in shots-on-goal, and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

Gabrielle Foley recorded five saves in net for the Lady Tigers.
