WAVERLY - Junior Gabby Picco and freshman Kennedy Westbrook each netted hat tricks as Waverly rolled to an 11-1 win over Tioga here Friday afternoon in IAC girls soccer action at Memorial Stadium.

Senior Melina Ortiz scored one goal and dished out three assists in the win, while 8th-grader Lea VanAllen scored two goals, senior Sadie VanAllen had one goal and one assist, and junior Tessa Petlock added one goal.

"Today was a good challenge for us," said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. "We were able to try a few new things and work on things that we needed to. 

"With six different players getting opportunities to score and seven different players getting assists, I am happy with our efforts," she noted.

"Every year I say it, but I give Tioga lot of credit," added Hogan. They never gave up. It was very hot and they were playing the game without any subs.  They didn't shut down at any point and were able to score on a well-placed goal."

Westbrook opened the scoring with 34:34 remaining in the first half, off a feed from Ortiz, who also assisted on Sadie Van Allen's goal that made it 2-0 10 1/2 minutes later.

Lea VanAllen scored an unassisted goal midway through the first half, and Westbrook added an unassisted tally with 7 minutes left to make it 4-0.

Picco, off a feed from senior Cora Smith, scored from long range with 44 seconds left in the first half to extend the advantage to 5-0 at the intermission.

Ortiz, off an assist from Westbrook, and Picco, off a feed from Ortiz, scored goals three minutes apart to make it 7-0 five minutes into the second half.

Picco, from Sadie VanAllen, and Lea VanAllen, from Picco, scored goals two minutes apart to extend the lead to 9-0 with 26 minutes left in the game.

Westbrook and Petlock finished off the Waverly scoring, with Allison Campbell and Kaitlyn Clark credited with assists.

Tioga broke up the shutout with 4 minutes remaining on a goal by senior Jocelyn Bradley from near the top of the 18.

Waverly outshot Tioga 36-8. Both teams had one corner kick.

Gabrielle Foley recorded 18 saves in net for Tioga, while Clark had six saves for Waverly, and Lea VanAllen added four.

Waverly, now 6-1, returns to action Monday at SVEC, while Tioga, now 2-5, hosts Watkins Glen.
