SECTION IV FOOTBALL: MAINE-ENDWELL'S THIRD-QUARTER SCORING BINGE PROVES COSTLY; WAVERLY FALLS 47-27 (19 PHOTOS) (2019-09-20)

Valley Sports Report
ENDWELL "” Mike Mancini scored three TDs in four minutes to help Maine-Endwell blow open a close en route to a 47-27 win over Waverly here Friday night in Section IV, Division II football action.

"He was the best athlete on the field, and he kind of took over late in the game," said Waverly coach Jason Miller of Mancini. "It was a good football game up to the point he took over.

""I thought we played them tough," he noted. "Basically, every time (M-E) scored, we answered them except for that spurt of three Mancini touchdowns.

"I liked the way our kids played tonight. I don't think the score was indicative of how the game went.

"There were a lot of third- and fourth-down situations where we couldn't get off the field - M-E made big plays," added Miller.

M-E quarterback Nick DeLucia gave the Spartans a 7-0 lead four minutes into the game with a 1-yard TD run.

Waverly answered with a scoring drive of its own, capped by a 1-yard TD run by junior David Hallett to tie the game at 7-7 with 2:26 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, DeLucia scored on a 6-yard run, and Mancini added a 14-yard TD run to give the Spartans a 20-7 lead at the half.

Waverly opened the second half with a scoring drive, capped by a 1-yard TD run by Hallett, to trim the lead to 20-14, but the rest of the quarter belonged to Mancini, who returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards to the Waverly 40.

A few plays into the drive, DeLucia broke loose on a 21-yard run to the Waverly 12, and a flag for a late hit moved the ball to the Waverly 6.

On fourth-and-goal from the 7, DeLucia connected with Mancini in the corner of the end zone. Mancini added the conversion run to make it 28-13 with 4:10 left in the third quarter.

Waverly's next possession ended on down at the M-E 37, and, following an encroachment call against the Wolverines, Mancini broke a run outside and sprinted 58 yards down the sidelines to paydirt.

A three-and-out and subsequent punt gave the Spartans the ball back at their 23, and Mancini needed just one play - a jet sweep to the home sidelines that resulted in a 77-yard TD run to make it 40-13 with 11.8 seconds left in the third quarter.

"We gave them the ball back, and they really capitalized on it," said Miller. "It's amazing how quickly it happened."

Junior Austin Kimble scored on a 37-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter, and Hallett added a 19-yard TD run late in the final stanza to account for Waverly's scoring.

Miller said he was pleased with team's performance on offense.

"Joey (Tomasso) played really well. He made really good decisions throwing the ball, and we did a really good job up front protecting him - I don't think he got touched.

"Throughout the evening, with the exception of two possessions, we did a really nice job running the football," said Miller.

"Offensively, it was a pretty good evening. I was pretty happy with the way we played," he added.

Tomasso completed 17 of 28 passes for 157 yards. He also threw the first interception of his career.

Hallett led Waverly with 100 yards and three TDs on 15 carries, while Kimble added 88 yards and one TD on five carries, and Price chipped in with 18 yards on three carries.

Junior Aidan Westbrook led Waverly's receivers with six catches for 86 yards, while senior Ethan Stotler had for grabs for 40 yards, and senior Jalen McCarty chipped in with two catches for 19 yards.

Mancini rushed for 163 yards and three TDs on just six carries, and also caught three passes for 39 yards and one TD.

DeLucia completed 5 of 9 passes for 63 yards and one TD, and rushed for 34 yards and two TDs on seven carries.

Maine-Endwell amassed 469 yards in total offense, including 409 rushing yards on 55 carries, while Waverly tallied 372 total yards, including 215 yards on 25 carries.

Waverly, now 2-1, visits Chenango Valley Friday.
