NTL VOLLEYBALL: UNBEATEN WELLSBORO SWEEPS ATHENS (2019-09-21)

ATHENS "” Unbeaten Wellsboro swept Athens here Saturday afternoon to keep pace with North Penn atop the NTL Large School Division volleyball standings.

The Lady Green Hornets (7-0 overall) swept the Lady Wildcats by scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-19, and are tied atop the divisional standings with NP-L at 5-0. Athens is in third place 4-2, with its losses coming to NP-L and Wellsboro.

"We played scrappy, relentless defense and made Wellsboro work for the wins," said Athens coach Heather Hanson. "We will continue to improve."

Junior Kayleigh Miller led Athens with 10 service points, including a pair of aces, 15 setter assists and eight digs, while junior Taylor Field had five points and a team-high 24 digs, junior Kylie Jayne registered team-highs with seven kills and three blocks, as well as two digs.

Junior Leah Liechty added three points, four kills, and two blocks for the Lady Wildcats, while senior Cassidy Stackpole had two points - both aces, two kills, and 12 digs, sophomore Taylor Walker had two points, two kills, and seven digs, senior Haley Barry added two points and six digs, freshman Jenny chipped in with had two points and four digs, and Grace Witherow and Audrey Hatch recorded four digs and two digs, respectively.

Caitlyn Callahan led Wellsboro with 19 kills and one block, while Breigh Kemp had 11 service points, including four aces, 19 assists, and 10 digs, Kathryn Burnett had nine points and 15 digs, and Megan Starkweather added eight points and nine assists.

"Callahan is a stellar hitter," said Hanson.

Athens, now 4-2, hosts Towanda Tuesday.

JV: Wellsboro pulled out a 2-1 win over Athens in the junior varsity match. Wellsboro opened with a 25-5 win in the first set, and closed the match with a 15-7 win in the third set. Athens won the second set 25-12.
