IAC VOLLEYBALL: WAVERLY OUTLASTS EDISON IN FIVE-SET THRILLER (2019-09-23)

WAVERLY "” It's becoming common practice for Waverly and Edison to play five sets. Monday night, the Lady Wolverines let a 2-0 lead slip away, but won the decisive fifth set on in a 3-2 decision in IAC volleyball action.

The match was third consecutive five-set match between the two teams, and the fifth in the last four years.

Waverly opened with identical wins of 25-19, but Edison answered with wins of 25-23 and 25-15 to force the fifth set. The Lady Wolverines prevailed 25-15.

Last year, Edison rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Lady Wolverines. But it was Waverly that had the last laugh with a five-set win over the Lady Spartans in the Section IV, Class C semifinals on the way to its first-ever Sectional title.

Monday night, senior Chloe Croft led Waverly with 16 service points, including four aces, 23 setter assists, and 11 digs, while senior Adrianah Clinton had 12 points, including six aces, seven digs, and seven kills, and senior Morgan Adams had 11 points, including five aces, and five kills.

Junior Maddy Goodwin had 10 points, 10 digs and five kills in the win, while junior Sidney Tomasso addd nine points (four aces), senior Paige Lewis registered eight kills, four blocks, and 22 digs, and sophomore Aryan Peters recorded 12 digs.

Maren Lutz led Edison with 15 kills, three blocks, and 13 digs, while Mikayla Bush had 11 points and 11 assists, Hailey Fierro registered 10 kills and four blocks, and Reagan Selye added eight points and 12 digs.

Waverly, now 5-2, returns to action Wednesday when it hosts unbeaten Candor.

JV: Edison won the junior varsity match, 2-1. It won the first set 25-8 and the third set 25-18, while Waverly won the second se 25-22.

Waverly, now 5-2, was led by Kennedy Herriman, who had 13 points, including seven aces, and five digs, and Aubrey Ennis, who had four kills and six digs.
