IAC GIRLS SWIMMING: WHITLEY, OPENING RELAY SPARK WAVERLY IN 101-76 WIN OVER LANSING (15 PHOTOS) (2019-10-01)

WAVERLY "” Junior Maggie Whitley was a quad-winner, and four of her teammates were double-winners as Waverly snapped a three-meet losing streak with a 101-75 win over Lansing here Tuesday afternoon in IAC girls swimming action.

"The girls stayed ahead from the beginning," said Waverly coach Amy Steck. "If not landing first-place, sweeping 2,3,4 for a 9-7 point split, which kept the score consistently in our favor throughout the duration of the meet."

Sophomores Lourden Benjamin, Willow Sharpsteen, and Delaney Vascoe, and freshman Sophia DeSisti were double-winners for the Lady Wolverines, who improve to 3-3 on the season.

Benjamin, Vascoe, Sharpsteen, and Whitley won the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay in dramatic fashion in a time of 2:11.2, edging the Lansing foursome by 0.2 seconds.

The Lady Bobcats led the relay by 5.86 second after the first leg (backstroke). Vascoe was able to trim 0.07 seconds of the deficit in the breaststroke, but it was Sharpsteen who did the majority of the damage, winning the butterfly leg by 4.78 seconds with a split of 30.25 seconds to put the foursome within range.

Whitley finished off the comeback with a 27.24 split in the freestyle to deliver the win.

Whitley won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 27.65 seconds. She also won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:02.5, and Vascoe was third in a personal-best time of 1:04.17.

Whitley, teamed with Benjamin, Sharpsteen and DeSisti to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:56.22.
 
DeSisti won the 200-yard freestyle in a personal-best time of 2:23.04, and junior Mara Callear was second in 2:27.29.

Vascoe won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:23.55.

Freshman Josie VanDyke won the 1-meter diving competition with a personal-best score of 153.6 points

Benjamin finished second in the 200-yard IM in 2:37.81, and Sharpsteen was third in 2:41.59. Benjamin was also second in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:13.76, and sophomore Mackenzie Nichols was third in 1:18.82.

Sharpsteen finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:08.73, and Nichols was third in 1:20.52.

Callear finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 6:42.69, and Luci Burnett was third in 7:36.16.

Waverly returns to action Thursday at Whitney Point.
