IAC GIRLS SOCCER: WAVERLY TOPS NEWARK VALLEY, 6-1, TO CLINCH THIRD STRAIGHT DIVISION TITLE (19 PHOTOS) (2019-10-07)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY "” Waverly had five different players score goals  in a 6-1 win over Newark Valley, and clinched the IAC South Large School Division title for the third year in a row here Monday afternoon in girls soccer action at Memorial Stadium.

"This was a big game for us," said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. "Winning the division is always a great accomplishment. I am very proud of this team.

"Possession has been key," noted Hogan. "The girls continue to be strong with their possession and continue to have more accurate shooting. We're not just throwing a shot out there and hoping for the best.

"They're taking their time and playing with real confidence," she added. "We're really using Cora (Smith), Bella (Romano), and Tessa (Petlock) as great options, and moving the ball as a unit starting from the back."

Senior Sadie VanAllen scored four minutes into the game when she cut the ball back on to her right foot and fired a shot from the top-of-the-18 into the upper-90 to give the Lady Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

Midway through the first half, senior Melina Ortiz boomed in a free kick from 40 yards out, over the NV wall and the keeper's head, to make it 2-0.

With 11 minutes remaining in the fist half, 8th-grader Lea VanAllen took a feed from freshman Kennedy Westbrook and beat the NV keeper to make it 3-0.

About three minutes later, Westbrook took a feed from Lea VanAllen and scored to make it 4-0.

Mackenna Nechwedowich put Newark Valley on the board with 2 minutes remaining to trim the lead to 4-1 at the intermission.

Ortiz, off a feed from Westbrook, scored with 17 minutes remaining, and junior Gabby provided the final margin with 6 minutes left, off an assist from Petlock.

Waverly had a 20-9 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Kaitlyn Clark had eight saves in net for the Lady Wolverines.

Waverly, now 12-1, hosts SVEC Wednesday in its final regular-season home game of the season.
