NTL CROSS COUNTRY: ATHENS BOYS TOP WELLSBORO; WIN FIRST LARGE SCHOOL TITLE SINCE 1997 (2019-10-08)

WELLSBORO - Athens dropped its first decision of the year, but topped Wellsboro here Tuesday afternoon in boys cross country action to win its first NTL Large School Division title since 1997.

Wyalusing had the first four finishers in the race to top the Wildcats 19-36, but the Wildcats' top five all finished before Wellsboro's first runner for a 15-49 win to cap a 9-1 season.

Senior T.J. Toscano finished fifth in a time of 18:43, while sophomores Kyle Anthony (19:22) and Matt Gorsline (19:29), and junior Connor Dahl (19:38) finished fifth through eighth, respectively, and freshman Nate Prickitt was 10th in 20:42.

Brendon Jones finished 11th in 20:45 for the Wildcats, while Sander Bertsch was 13th in 20:59, junior Justin Lynch was 14th in 21:21, junior Mason Henderson was 16th in 22:19, freshman Dustin Krise was 19th in 23:29, and senior Ben Biles was 21st in 23:37.

Zion Laudermilch (18:22), Alex Patton (18:23), Lemuel Laudermilch (18:23) and Logan Newton (18:38) finished first through fourth, respectively, for Wyalusing.

GIRLS
Freshman Emma Bronson led the short-handed Lady Wildcats, clocking in at 23:24 to finish fourth in the double-dual against Wyalusing and Wellsboro.

Athens, with just three runners, lost both decisions, 15-50.

Sophomore Emily King finished 13th in 30:53, and sophomore Raven McCarthy-Gardner was 14th in 33:52.

Athens returns to action Friday at the Newark Valley Invitational.
