NEWARK VALLEY "” Newark Valley scored three goals early in the second half to blow open a close game en route to a 4-1 win over Waverly here Tuesday night in IAC boys soccer action.

Ronan Dougherty scored on a penalty kick in the first minute of the game to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead, but neither team dented the other's defense for the remainder of the first half.

"We played really well in the first half," said Waverly coach Eric Ryck. "Short of the penalty kick we gave up in the first minute, it was the best soccer we've played all year.

"We just have trouble being consistent for the entire 80 minutes," noted Ryck. "We had some big mental errors in the middle of the field in the second half, and Newark  Valley was able to take advantage with three really well-placed shots."

Nathan Sokol scored in the 45th minute to give NV a 2-0 lead, then scored again two minutes later to make it 3-0.

Sokol capped his hat trick off five minutes later to extend the lead to 4-0.

Sophomore Brennan Traub put Waverly on the board midway through the second half.

"We had plenty of opportunities to get back in the game and Brennan Traub's goal in the second half lit a spark," said Ryck, "but we struggled to finish.

"I think it's due to how young we are as a soccer team," added Ryck, "but we keep continuing to grow and improve every day and in the end that's the goal."

Newark Valley outshot Waverly, 14-4, and had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore Cameron McIsaac had nine saves in net for the Wolverines, who fall to 1-9-1.

Waverly returns to action Thursday night when it hosts Notre Dame. Game time is 6 p.m.
