IAC GIRLS SOCCER: WAVERLY BLANKS SVEC, 4-0 (24 PHOTOS) (2019-10-09)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY "” Senior Melina Ortiz netted a hat trick, and junior Gabby Picco doled out three assists to lead Waverly to a 4-0 "˜Senior Night' win over SVEC here Wednesday afternoon in IAC South Large School Division girls soccer action.
"We were a bit slow to start today," said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. "We got into a bad habit of not talking and started taking shots that were rushed, and off-target.
"We're coming off of a few games in a row where neither one of these things were an issue," she added. "Looking forward to postseason, we cannot afford to get complacent."
Senior Sadie Van Allen, off a feed from Picco, put Waverly on the board about 11 minutes into the game.
"Sadie has gotten so much more comfortable with taking on opponents 1-v-1, and not shying away from using her left," said Hogan.
Ortiz, off a feed from VanAllen, scored three minutes later to make it 2-0, which is where it stood at the half.
Ortiz scored four minutes into the second half, and then again six minutes later - both off assists from Picco - to provide the final margin.
"Melina (Ortiz) had a great game, taking advantage of shooting from well outside the 18," said Hogan. "And, Gabby has an unbelievable ability to see open lanes to her teammates."
Waverly had a 32-2 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
Junior Kaitlyn Clark had one save in net for the Lady Wolverines.
Waverly, now 12-1, closes out the regular season Friday at Newfield.
