IAC GIRLS SOCCER: TIOGA LETS LEAD SLIP AWAY; FALLS 8-6 AT WATKINS GLEN (2019-10-09)
Valley Sports ReportWAtKINS GLEN "” Tioga led 4-0 and 5-1 in the first half, but Watkins Glen stormed back, triggered by two goals late in the first half, for an 8-6 win here Wednesday afternoon in IAC South Small School Division girls soccer action.
"A very disappointing loss to say the least," said Tioga coach Jim Walsh. "It was a tale of two halves and a game of one huge momentum swing.
"Watkins Glen scored two goals within minutes of the end of the first half and that momentum carried right into the second half," he noted. "We were totally outplayed and out-hustled in the second half.
"We couldn't possess the ball with any regularity, nor stop the ball from getting into their senior forward Adrie Solomon," added Walsh. "She either scored unassisted or dished off the ball to Abigail Gibson."
With injuries reducing the Tioga roster to 10 players, Watkins Glen agreed to play 10-on-10 the entire game.
"We were without our starting goalie Gabrielle Foley for the second game in a row, I believe that also played a big factor in the game outcome," said Walsh.
Senior Mackenzie Macumber scored twice, and senior Jocelyn Bradley scored on a direct kick to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead midway through the first half.
Junior Destini Sweet converted a penalty kick with 13:33 remaining in the first half to make it 4-0.
Watkins Glen got on the board with 6:10 remaining, but Sweet scored two minutes later to push the lead back to four goals, at 5-1.
The Lady Senecas then scored twice in a 26-second span to trim the deficit to 5-3 with 51.8 seconds left in the first half.
Watkins Glen scored 10 1/2 minutes into the second half, and again 10 minutes later to tie the game at 5-5, but Macumber completed her hat trick on a breakaway just 14 seconds later to give the Lady Tigers a 6-5 lead with 19:24 remaining in the contest.
The Lady Senecas tied the game with 12:01 remaining, then took a 7-6 lead 3 1/2 minutes later. They capped the scoring with 6:13 remaining.
Abigail Gibson scored four goals for Watkins Glen, and Adrie Solomon added three.
Watkins Glen had a 22-17 advantage in shots-on-goal, while Tioga had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Junior Eve Wood, and sophomore Abagail Foley combined to make 14 saves for the Lady Tigers.
Tioga, now 4-9, close out the 2019 campaign Friday when they host NEB.
