IAC BOYS SOCCER: WAVERLY BLANKS NOTRE DAME, 1-0 — FIRST WIN OVER CRUSADERS SINCE 2009 (16 PHOTOS) (2019-10-10)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY "” Junior Nate Ryck scored with 9 1/2 minutes remaining in the game to lift Waverly to a 1-0 win over Notre Dame here Thursday afternoon in IAC South Large School Division boys soccer action at Memorial Stadium.

The win is Waverly's first against the Crusaders since Sept. 29, 2009 - a 2-1 win decision at Notre Dame.

"What a game," said Waverly coach Eric Ryck. "That really was the best soccer we've played all year.

"The boys were composed, made great decisions with the ball, and worked their tails off for the entire 80 minutes," noted Ryck. "It was Senior Night and this is somewhat of a rivalry game, so the boys were really hyped tonight and it showed."

Waverly sophomore net minder Cameron McIsaac kept the game scoreless in the first half with five saves, including a pair of athletic stops.

Midway through the first half, McIsaac leaped high into the air to deflect a rocket shot from outside the 18 over the crossbar.

In the closing minutes of the half, McIsaac made a diving stop of hard shot to the post, deflecting it wide.

With 9 1/2 minutes remaining, Notre Dame was whistled for a "dangerous play," and Waverly received an indirect kick from just inside the 18. Senior striker Rylan Laforest jumped over the ball, and junior Nate Ryck drove a shot toward the net. The Notre Dame keeper was able to get his hands on the ball, but it deflected into the net.

"The boys have made great progress this year, and I'm so glad they get to experience some success because they deserve it," said Ryck. "It's been 10 years since we've been able to best Notre Dame on the soccer field, this is a big win for the program."

Notre Dame outshot Waverly, 8-5, and had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

McIsaac recorded eight saves in net for the Wolverines.

Waverly, now 2-9-1, closes out its 2019 campaign Tuesday at SVEC.
