NTL VOLLEYBALL: WELLSBORO SWEEPS ATHENS (2019-10-15)

WELLSBORO - Wellsboro held off a pesky Athens squad in the first set, then rolled to a sweep here Tuesday night in NTL Large School volleyball action.

The Lady Green Hornets, now 15-2, won the first set 25-19, then closed out the match with wins of 25-10 and 25-7.

"We played some great defense tonight with digs and blocks," said Athens coach Heather Hanson. "However, we couldn't put more then two points together at a time.

We need to be as aggressive on offense as we are on defense," she added.

Junior Taylor Field led Athens with three points and 18 digs, while junior Leah Liechty registered five kills and two blocks, senior Haley Barry had 14 digs and two kills, and freshman Jenny Ryan had two blocks and three digs.

Junior Kayleigh Miller had 10 setter assists and two digs for the Lady Wildcats, while senior Cassidy Stackpole recorded seven digs. junior Kylie Jayne had two kills, junior Gracie Witherow added four digs, and sophomore Taylor Walker chipped in with one block.

Breigh Kemp led Wellsboro with 17 points, including three aces, 10 setter assists, nine digs, five kills, while Caitlyn Callahan had eight points, including four aces, and 21 kills, Ryan Adams had seven points (two aces) and 17 digs, and Megan Starkweather added 15 assists and four kills.

Athens, now 9-5, returns to action Thursday at Towanda.

JV: Wellsboro swept the junior varsity match by scores of 26-24 and 25-16.
