IAC VOLLEYBALL: EDISON RALLIES TO WIN FIVE-SET MARATHON OVER WAVERLY (2019-10-17)

ELMIRA HEIGHTS - Red-hot Edison rallied from a 2-1 deficit to post a five=set win over Waverly here Thursday night to effectively end the Lady Wolverines' chances at an IAC South Large School Division volleyball title.

With the loss, Waverly falls to 10-5 and into a second-place tied with Edison, 1/2-game behind Newark Valley, which plays Newfield (2-12) Friday, and O-M (4-9) Monday, while Waverly plays unbeaten Candor Monday. With two wins over Waverly, the Lady Cardinals need just one win to clinch the division title.

The five-match marathon was the fourth time in the last five matches the two teams have battled through five full sets.

Waverly opened the match with a 25-21 win in the first set, but Edison bounced back with a 25-15 win in the second set.

The Lady Wolverines took a 2-1 lead with a 25-14 win in the third set, but the Lady Spartans closed out the set with consecutive wins of 25-21.

Sophomore Sidney Tomasso led Waverly with 16 points and 20 digs, while senior Paige Lewis had eight points, including three aces, eight kills and four blocks and senior Adrianah Clinton had eight points, eight kills, and 22 digs.

Senior Chloe Croft had 26 setter assists and 16 digs for the Lady Wolverines, and junior Maddy Goodwin registered seven kills.

Waverly closest out the regular season Monday at Candor.

JV: Edison won the junior varsity match, 2-1.

Paighten Streeter led Waverly with eight points, while Kennedy Herriman had seven points, seven digs, and five setter assists, and Sydney Nierstedt registered six kills and two blocks.
