PIAA GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: SAYRE'S HUGHEY CAPS STELLAR CAREER WITH RUN AT STATES (2019-11-02)

Valley Sports Report
HERSHEY "" Sayre senior Kayla Hughey capped a stellar career here Saturday morning with an 88th-place finish here on the Hershey Parkview course at the PIAA, Class A girls cross country championships.

"I feel very accomplished," she said. "I would have never have thought I would be here in the beginning. I feel proud of the season I had."

Hughey clocked in with a time of 22:03.3 on the 5K course in a field of 209 runners.

"I felt I did pretty good," she said. "For a while, I couldn't get out of a big pack, so it made it difficult to get off to a good start."

"I just started going through people because my dad says if you lift your legs it will help you," noted Hughey. "I didn't use a lot of energy on the hills because of how I ran, but I passed a lot of people because they went out too fast and they died on the hills."

Our Lady of Sacred Heart senior Haley Hamilton won the Class A gold in a time of 19:19.9.

The top NTL finishers were Towanda senior Erica Locke, who finished 52nd in a time of 21:21.2, and Wyalusing junior Catherine Brown, who was 54th in 21:24.8.
