IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY'S KELLY LIKES TEAM 'MIX' AS IT PREPARES FOR 2019-20 (10 PHOTOS) (2019-11-19)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY "” Waverly girls basketball coach Bob Kelly is glad to be back on the floor, even with a week less of preparation time for the 2019-20 season.
"It's my favorite time of the year," said Kelly. I enjoy the fall, but this season when the leaves are down, the skies are gray, the temperatures get colder ... I love this time of year.
"This sound, the sounds of basketballs hitting the floor is what I love to hear," he added.
Numbers for varsity are normal, but the Lady Wolverines currently have just five or six players in the JV ranks.
"We have 11 on varsity," said Kelly. "We're a little thin on JVs, but we'll work through it."
With New York State moving the winter schedule back a week, teams have one less week of practice time this year.
"We obviously have a lot more to put in, and we have less time to do it," said Kelly.
"That's what scrimmages are for - to see how they pay attention in the huddle, to put things in during a timeout and see how they handle it," he noted. "I think it's going to work out OK for us.
"So far, what we have put in the girls were able to grasp real quick," added Kelly. "I wish we had a little bit more time."
Waverly's roster includes four returning varsity players, and a host of newcomers
"It's a nice mix," said Kelly. "These kids have been around each other for a while.
"They all played summer league together, so they're familiar with each other," noted Kelly. "I think it's a good a thing to have a mix like this - a veteran group with some young kids. I'm happy with it."
Waverly hosts Newfield in a scrimmage today, then will host Elmira Thursday. The Lady Wolverines will scrimmage at O-M on Nov. 27, and will scrimmage against Seton Catholic, Cicero-North Syracuse, and Horseheads at Horseheads on Nov. 30.
