VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: WAVERLY'S TALADA REPEATS AS "RUNNER OF YEAR;" ATHENS' BRONSON TOP NEWCOMER OF 2019 (2 PHOTOS) (2019-11-26)

THE VALLEY - Senior Sheridan Talada became the first Waverly girl to earn a state medal and is the 2019 Valley Sports Girls Cross Country "Runner of the Year."

Talada, who was also VSR's Runner of the Year in 2018, finished third at Section IV, Class C State Qualifier, after winning the IAC divisional meet, and finishing second at the IAC Championships.

During the regular season, she won the Tom Koons Valley meet, and the Baxter-McDaniel Invite (Chenango Valley), finished second at the rugged Marathon Invite, third at the prestigious McQuaid Invitational (Rochester), third at the Bob Greene Invite (Newark Valley), third at Forbes Invitational (Oneonta), and fifth at the Owego Invite.

She also who won all but one of the Lady Wolverines dual races.

Talada also became the first Wolverine harrier to run in the New York State Federation Cup meet, and finished 54th in a field of 249 runners.

Athens freshman Emma Bronson turned in a strong first varsity season, and is the 2019 Girls Cross Country "Newcomer of the Year."

Bronson led the Lady Wildcats in every dual race of the season. She finished fourth at Tom Koons Valley meet, 15th at McDaniel-Baxter Invite, 28th at Forbes Invitational, 33rd at Bob Greene Invitational, 42nd at Owego Invite, and 51st at the rugged McQuaid Invitational.

Bronson finished 34th at the District 4, Class AA Championships.

The Girls Cross Country Super 7 features four seniors, one junior, one sophomore, and one freshman.

The remainder of the Girls Cross Country "Super 7" is:

Elizabeth Fritzen, senior, Waverly: Fritzen enjoyed an excellent season with five Top-10 finishes at invitationals during the regular season, and three in the postseason, including one to earn her first trip to States.

During the regular season, Fritzen finished second at Tom Koons Valley meet, fourth at the McDaniel-Baxter Invite, ninth at Bob Greene Invitational, ninth at Forbes Invitational, 10th at Marathon Invite, 13th at Owego Invite, and 15th at the prestigious McQuaid Invitational.

She finished fifth at Section IV, Class C State Qualifier, after finishing third at the IAC divisional meet, and eighth at IAC Championships. She was 56th at States.

Kayla Hughey, senior, Sayre:
Hughey enjoyed a strong pal season, and finished third at the Tom Koons Valley meet, and 24th at the Owego Invite.

Hughey was fifth at NTL Championships, and fifth at District 4, Class A Championships to earn a trip to the PIAA Championships. She finished 88th at States.

Paige Ackley, senior, Waverly: Ackley was consistently the No. 3 runner for the Lady Wolverines, and had three Top-10 finishes on the season.

Ackley finished fifth at the Tom Koons Valley meet, 10th at the McDaniel-Baxter Invite, 26th at Bob Greene Invite, 33rd at Marathon Invite, 37th at the Owego Invite, 38th at Forbes Invitational, and 44th at the rugged McQuaid Invitational.

She finished eighth at the IAC Divisional meet, 17th at the IAC Championships, and 13th at the Section IV, Class C State Qualifier.

Lucy Coller, junior, Sayre: Coller finished sixth at the Tom Koons Valley meet, and 24th at NTL Championships.

She finished 33rd at the District 4, Class A Championships.

Olivia Nittinger, sophomore, Waverly:
Plagued by injuries in 2019, Nittinger capped her season with an 18th-place finish at the Section IV, Class C State Qualifier.

Nittinger was 17th at the Owego Invite, 19th at the Forbes Invitational, and 39th at the Marathon Invite. She was 20th at IAC Championships.
