THE VALLEY — The winter season gets under way in Pa. tonight, with both Sayre basketball teams on the road at tip-off tournaments, while the Tioga boys and Waverly girls host divisional rivals on the hardwoods.
The Waverly wrestling team is in action at the two-day Mark Stevens Classic in Horseheads.
Waverly (0-1) at Newark Valley (1-0), 5:30 p.m. JV start: The Wolverines are coming off a 66-55 loss to Union-Endicott Tuesday, while the Cardinals opened the season with a 49-33 non-league win over Oxford.
Last year, Waverly won at home with 6-8 Scott Woodring in the line-up, 67-61. Later in the season, with Woodring injured, the Cardinals topped the Wolverines, 69-55.
Candor (1-1) at Tioga, 6 p.m. JV start: The Tigers open the 2019-20 season with a young nine-player roster, including three sophomores and an 8th-grader. Senior Thomas Cook, who injured his knee during football season, will miss the first two games of the season.
The Indians are coming off a 51-38 loss to Union-Endicott Thursday night.
Candor won 53-47 at Tioga in their first meeting in 2018-19, but the Tigers returned the favor at Candor with a 62-61 win later in the season.
Blue Ridge Tip-Off Tournament
Sayre (7-15) at Blue Ridge (5-19), 6 p.m.: The Redskins have a new coach in Devin Shaw, and some new faces as they open the 2019-20 campaign looking to improve on last year’s 7-15 record.
Last year, Blue Ridge won the season-opener, 58-38.
Newark Valley (1-0) at Waverly, 5:30 p.m.: The Wolverines return just two starters from a 20-2 team that lost to Owego in the Class B semifinals.
The Lady Cardinals, who were 16-4 last year, opened the 2019-20 campaign with a 92-36 rout of Union-Endicott Tuesday.
Last year, Waverly won at Newark Valley, 49-46, then topped the Cardinals, 58-38, at home later in the season.
Tioga (0-1) at Candor (0-1), 5:30 p.m.: The Lady Tigers dropped a 59-42 decision to O-M Tuesday in their season-opener, while the Lady Indians suffered a 47-33 home loss to Notre Dame.
Last year, Candor won at home, 55-28. In their second meeting, Candor won at Tioga, 39-33.
Towanda Tip-Off Tournament
Sayre (19-8 in 2018-19) vs. Blue Ridge, 6 p.m.: The Lady Redskins return just two starters from a 19-8 team that saw its season end in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs.
Last year, Sayre rolled to a 63-22 win over Blue Ridge.
Waverly at Mark Stephens Classic @ Horseheads M.S.: The Wolverines, coming off a 45-36 loss at Newark Valley in its season-opener Wednesday, will face some stiff competition this weekend at the Mark Stephens Classic.
Other teams in the field include Camden, Penfield, Chenango Valley, Fulton, Gouverneur, Middletown, South Seneca, Wayne, and Horseheads.
