IAC WRESTLING: TIOGA CROWNS SEVEN CHAMPS, THREE RUNNERS-UP TO WIN TEAM TITLE AT WELLSVILLE TOURNAMENT (2019-12-09)

WELLSVILLE "”  Tioga crowned seven champs and had three runners-up to win the team title Saturday at the Wellsville Secondary School Wrestling Tournament.

"I was happy with our performances," said Tioga coach Kris Harrington. "It's a good warm-up for our match with BGAH on Friday.

Seniors Brady Worthing and Jacob Welch, junior Matt Milner, sophomore Mason Welch, freshman Donovan Smith, and 8th-graders Gianni Silvestri and Caden Bellis all earned individual gold, and junior Justin Hopkins, 8th-grader Deakon Bailey, and 7th-grader Levi Bellis placed second in their weight classes.

99 pounds: Silvestri opened the day with a pin of Wellsville's Jayden Acker in 91 seconds, then pinned Bailey in 1:53 in the finals.

Bailey advanced to the finals with a 7-0 decision over Acker.

106 pounds: Caden Bellis opened with a 17-2 technical fall in 2:00 over Warsaw's Priyanka Monger to advance to the finals, where he beat Levi Bellis via technical fall, 16-1 in 3:31.

Levi Bellis advanced to the finals with a 16-1 technical fall over Monger.

120 pounds: Smith went 5-0 on the day, including four falls, to win the weight class.

Smith pinned Warsaw's Justin Baker in 3:03, then decked Brockton Hadfield of Wellsville in 1:28 to advance to the quarterfinals, where he flattened Geneva's Aiden Fallo in 58 seconds.

In the semifinals, Smith forged a 10-1 major decision over Geneva's Aiden Cupelli.

In the finals, Smith pinned Brandon Callaghan of Athens-Arcadia-Olympia, who is a returning Section V, Division I place-finisher, in 3:25.

Also at 120 pounds, freshman Emily Sindoni went 3-2 on the day. She registered three falls, including two in the first period.

126 pounds: Jacob Welch went 4-0 on the day, including two falls and two major decisions, to win his weight class.

Jacob Welch opened the day with a 28-second fall over Warsaw's Joe Gemegliaro, then forged a 17-4 major decision over Wellsville's Dale Abledinger.

In the semifinals, Jacob Welch decked Geneva's Michael Santiago in 69 seconds.

In the finals, Jacob Welch hammered out a 12-3 major decision over Athens-Arcadia-Olympia's Sam Orozco, who is a returning Section V, Division I place-finisher
 
Also at 126 pounds, sophomore Kamden Potter went 0-3.

132 pounds: Mason Welch went 4-0 to win the weight class, while teammates junior Justin Hopkins and freshman John Woodcock finished second and third, respectively.

Mason Welch opened with a win via injury default over Athens-Arcadia-Olympia's Nicky Callaghan, then pinned AAO's Chris Molica in 2:46 to advance to the semifinals, where he decked Geneva's Frankie Yunits in 3:23.

In the finals, Welch pinned Hopkins in 64 seconds.

Hopkins pinned Molica in 3:23, then received a medical forfeit from Callaghan, before losing to Mason Welch in the finals.

In the third-place match, Hopkins edged Woodcock, 8-7.

Woodcock lost via second-period fall to to Yunits in his first match, then registered a pair of pins to advance to the third-place match.

145 pounds: Worthing was 4-0 on the day, including three falls and a technical fall, to win the weight class.

Worthing opened with a 54-second decking of Warsaw's Santos Monger, the pinned Wellsville's Blake Pratt in 2:32.

In the semifinals, Worthing forged a 19-3 technical fall in 2:45 over AAO's Nick Murray-Termine.

In the finals, Worthing pinned Jasper-Troupsburg's Tristan Stone in 1:50.

195 pounds: Senior Aaron Howard finished third and senior Ryleigh Shedden was fourth.

Howard lost his first match via fall, but bounced back with a pin in 3:27 over AAO's Alecks Englert. He lost a 4-3 decision to Wellsville's John Layfield to fall into the third-place match.

In the third-place match, Howard pinned Shedden in 24 seconds.

Shedden pinned teammate sophomore Josh Snell in 4:59 to advance to the third-place match.

Snell was 0-3 on the day.

220 pounds: Junior Matt Milner went 5-0 to win the weight class, and freshman Bradley Guiles was 3-2 to finish fourth.

Millner notched a 3-1 win over Wellsville's Grady Ball, then pinned Warsaw's Cyrus Bliss in 1:52.

After pinning Guiles in 1:14, Milner pinned Geneva's Seth Margetson in 1:33 to advance to the finals.

In the title match, Milner pinned AAO's Anthony DiProspero in 3:57.

Guiles edged Bliss, 4-2, in his opening match, then pinned Margetson in 32 seconds.

After losing to Milner, Guiles dropped a wild 14-13 decision to DiProspero, then pinned Ball in 50 seconds to finish out his day.

Tioga hosts BGAH Friday at 6 p.m. in its first dual match of the season.
