YOUTH WRESTLING: WAVERLY YOUTH PROGRAM CROWNS TWO CHAMPS, SEVEN RUNNERS-UP AT ATHENS OPEN TOURNAMENT (2019-12-10)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY - The Waverly Youth Wrestling program sent 21 wrestlers, including 10 first-year competitors, to the Athens Open Tournament Sunday, and crowned two champs, as well as seven runners-up.
Both of Waverly's champs were in the 6-and-under Division.
Last year's NYWAY state runner-up Mason Phillips won Group 1 with three pins and a technical fall.
Bryce Wolcott won Group 2, pinning last year's NYWAY sixth-place finisher in the process.
Waverly seven second-place finishers were:
"¢ First-year wrestler Triton Floyd went 4-1 on the day, with his only loss a tight 6-4 match that came down to the final seconds;
"¢ First-year wrestler Max Rosenberger went 3-1 on the day, racking up two major decisions;
"¢ Returning NYWAY state qualifier Roark Ward went 3-1 on the day. He won some tight matches and wrestled very technically the entire day.
"¢ Returning NYWAY state qualifier Todd LaForest went 4-1 on the day. His only loss was to Nate Miller of Horseheads. Laforest was ahead, 3-2, but was tilted for a two-count with 15 seconds remaining in the match for a 4-3 loss.
"¢ Returning NUWAY National Champion Brayden Bowman went 3-1 on the day. Bowman is wrestling up an age group from last year, and faced some older and very stiff competition.
"¢ Skyler Perry made his first tournament appearance and went 3-1 on the day in the 11-12 Division. "He wrestled kids with much more experience and dominated most of his opponents," said coach Justin Wolcott.
"¢ Jarren Ennis went 1-1 on the day. He won his first match with a pin before falling via pin in his next match.
Third-place finishers from Waverly were 4-year-old Lucas Wolcott, Eli Keeney, Austin Conklin, and Malaikah Pittman.
Other wrestlers winning matches on the day were firstyear wrestlers Cayden Burnett, Madelyn Winslow, Brooklyn Root, Gage Floyd, Damion Barrett, Malia Phillips, Derek Thorp, and Jarrod Brown.
