SOUTHPORT, N.Y. "” Waverly overcame a slow start, and rallied for a 47-46 overtime win over Notre Dame here Monday night in IAC junior varsity girls basketball action.

Notre Dame jumped out to a 13-3 lead after the first eight minutes, but Waverly chipped away at the lead over the next three quarters.

Waverly trailed 23-9 late in the second quarter, but a bucket by Michaela Lauper and five points by Peyton Shaw, including a 3-pointer in the last two minutes of the first half, trimmed the deficit to 23-16 at the intermission.

Addison Westbrook scored seven points in the third quarter as Waverly cut the lead to 29-26 heading into the final eight minutes.

Westbrook and Ashlen Croft scored four points apiece in the fourth quarter, and Shaw's free throw with 7.8 seconds remaining in the game tied the game at 38-38 to force overtime.

In overtime, Westbrook started scoring with a bucket, and Shaw added two free throws in the opening minute to give Waverly a 42-38 lead.

After an ND field goal, Croft scored a bucket, and Westbrook and Shaw each made one free throw to give the junior Lady Wolverines a 46-40 lead with 47.9 seconds remaining.

Shaw added a free throw with 12.5 seconds remaining to put Waverly ahead at 47-43, and Notre Dame knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to provide the final margin.

Westbrook led Waverly with 17 points, while Shaw scored 11, Croft added wight, and Lauper chipped in with six.

Waverly, now 1-1, hosts Watkins Glen Thursday evening.
