IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY PULLS AWAY FROM NOTRE DAME IN 74-52 WIN (16 PHOTOS) (2019-12-10)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY "” Senior Scotty Woodring posted his third double-double in as many game as Waverly pulled away from a scrappy Notre Dame squad in a 74-52 win here Tuesday night in IAC South Large School Division action.

"I think our depth was a big key in the win," said Waverly coach Lou Judson.

"They shot the ball well in the second half, but not nearly as well as they did in the first half," he noted. "And, they were banging underneath all game with Scotty (Woodring), but didn't have the same type of energy in the second half.

"I think we wore them down in the second half," added Judson.

Sophomore Caden Hollywood knocked down an early 3-pointer and had five points, and junior Aidan Westbrook and Woodring scored four points apiece as Waverly built a 16-11 lead in the first eight minutes, despite a pair of 3-pointers by ND's Joe Sheehan, and another by Adam Ward.

Junior Ryan Lambert scored five points in the second quarter, and Woodring tossed in nine points, including a 3-pointer off one foot from 35-feet out at the halftime buzzer. Sheehan and Ward each drained a pair of 3-pointers in the stanza to keep the Crusaders within 11 points, at 38-27.

"Scotty's 3-pointer at the buzzer was big," said Judson. "It gave us a double-digit lead, and the momentum going into the half."

Woodring pumped in 11 points in the third quarter, and McCarty scored all five of his points, including a 3-pointer, as the Wolverines upped their lead to 56-42 heading into the final eight minutes.

The Wolverines had seven different players score in the fourth quarter, and were 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to put the game away.

The Crusaders knocked down 11 3-pointers in the loss.

"We've done a poor job defending the 3-pointer in our last two games," said Judson.

"Newark Valley had nine 3-pointers in our last game, and Notre Dame had 11 tonight," he noted. "I almost think our guys got a little shell-shocked.

"It's something we definitely need to improve on," added Judson.

Woodring led Waverly with 28 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocked shots, while Hollywood had 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists, junior Ryan Lambert scored nine points, and junior Aidan Westbrook added seven points and four boards.

McCarty had five points and three steals in the win, while junior Griffin Stein had five points and three rebounds, 8th-grader Joey Tomasso chipped in with four assists, three steals, and one blocked shot, and junior Peyton Bowen grabbed four boards.

"Overall, I'm pleased," said Judson. "We put 74 points on the board, so offensively we're getting close to putting it together.

"Defensively, there are still things we need to work on," he added.

Ward pumped in 24 points, including six 3-pointers, and Sheehan added 16, including four 3-pointers to lead Notre Dame.

Waverly, now 2-1, returns to action Saturday at Watkins Glen.
