John Worthing, a freshman on the Clarion University wrestling team, finished fourth in the 149-pound bracket here Saturday at the Cleveland State Open.
In his opening match, Worthing stacked up Jeff Mullinax of Findlay for a fall at 2:18, then scored a takedown in the first overtime period for a 10-8 decision over N.C. State's Matt Field.
In the quarterfinals, Worthing decked Kent State's Ian Senz in 3:55.
Worthing faced second-seed Trevor Chumbley of Northwestern in the semifinals, and dropped a 5-2 decision.
In the third-place match, top-seed P.J. Gohn of Edinboro forged an 8-5 decision.
WORTHING WINS FINDLAY OPEN
Worthing went 5-0 and won the 149-pound weight class at the Findlay Open on Nov. 16 in dominating fashion.
Worthing pinned Davenport University's Julian Abbott in 53 seconds in the opening round, the pinned second-seed Gustavo DeLima in 1:36 in the second round.
In the quarterfinals, Worthing forged a 14-4 major decision over Bellamine's Gage Branson.
In the semifinals, Worthing pinned third-seed Devin Rogers of Findlay in 3:23.
Worthing pounded out a 12-4 major decision over top-seed Carson Speelman of Ashland University in the 149-pond title match. Speelman advanced to the finals with a pair of technical falls, a first-period fall, and a 6-0 decision.
