IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY CRUSIES TO 62-18 WIN OVER LANSING (2020-01-10)

LANSING "" Waverly opened the game with a 10-0 run, and breezed to a 62-18 win over Lansing here Friday night in IAC Large School girls basketball action.

Senior Morgan Adams opened the scoring with a bucket to give the Lady Wolverines a 2-0 lead, and senior Paige Lewis added a free throw to make it 3-0.

Junior Sidney Tomasso then knocked down a pair of shots, sandwiched around a 3-pointer by freshman Kennedy Westbrook, in a 58-second span to up the Waverly lead to 10-0 with 4:50 remaining in the first quarter.

Lansing closed the gap to 13-5 at the end of the first eight minutes, but Tomasso drained a pair of 3-pointers, and a driving lay-up in the first 2 1/2 minutes of the second quarter to give the Lady Wolverines a 21-5 lead.

The Lady Bobcats trimmed the deficit to 24-13 at the half, but Tomasso and sophomore Olivia Nittinger scored four points apiece in a 15-2 third-quarter blitz that gave Waverly a 39-15 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Senior Gianna Picco knocked down a 3-pointer, and scored seven points in the fourth quarter, while Nittinger canned a 3-pointer and scored five points, and Lewis and Westbrook added 3-pointers in a game-closing 23-3 blitz.

Tomasso led Waverly with 18 points, while Nittinger scored 10, Picco had nine points, Lewis had eight, Westbrook added six points, and Adams and sophomore Lourden Benjamin chipped in with five points apiece.

Morgan Boerman led Lansing with seven points.

Waverly, now 7-2, hosts S-VE Tuesday night.
