NTL WRESTLING: ATHENS POSTS 1-2 RECORD AT HUSKY DUALS (January 12, 2020)
Valley Sports Report LEWISTON, Pa. - Athens went 1-2, and finished seventh here Saturday at the annual Husky Duals at Mifflin County High School.
Senior Keegan Braund posted a 3-0 record with three pins, and sophomore Gavin Bradley was 3-0, including one forfeit to lead the Wildcats.
Conestoga Valley 46, Athens 27 Third-seeded Conestoga Valley won seven weight classes in a row to by fall overcome an early deficit and top Athens, 46-27, in the opening round of the eight-team tournament.
Trent Ruble gave the Huskies a quick 3-0 lead with an 11-6 decision by fall over Athens junior Kyler Setzer at 106 pounds, but the Wildcats scored consecutive points to take a 12-3 lead.
Freshman Jacob Courtney pinned Dylan Rider at 2:49 at 113 pounds, and sophomore Gavin Bradley decked James Williams at 1:10 at 120 pounds.
The Huskies won the next three weight classes via first-period falls to take a 21-12 lead.
CV then won consecutive decisions as Jayden Fryberger forged a 9-1 major decision by fall over sophomore Warner Dorman, and Tayler Scheaffer edged junior Zach Stafursky, 7-6, at 152 pounds to make it 28-12.
Two more first-period falls extended the Huskies an insurmountable 40-12 lead.
Senior Alex West snapped the streak for Athens with a 4-3 decision by fall over Conrad Dillman at 182 pounds, then junior Ben Pernaselli decked Ben Reigner in 3:02 at 195 pounds.
After an Athens forfeit at 220, senior Keegan Braund scored a fall by fall over Jesse Lonon in 3:26 at 285 pounds.
Tyrone 35, Athens 34 Tyrone won three of the final five weight classes, including a major decision in the final bout, to win a 35-34 decision over Athens.
Bradley gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead with a hard-fought, 2-0, overtime victory over Hunter Walk in the 113-pound bout.
At 120 pounds, Courtney dropped a wild, 15-13, decision to Ashton Sipes, but sophomore Kaden Setzer received a forfeit at 126 pounds to put the Wildcats up 9-3.
Tyrone scored a fall at 132 pounds, but Athens freshman Brandon Jennings answered with a 10-1 major decision over Gavin Frazell to give the Wildcats a 13-9 lead.
After the Golden Eagles took the lead with a pin at 145, and a major decision at 152, Stafursky tied the bout, at 19-19, with a 57-second pin of Dean Grassi at 160 pounds.
At 170 pounds, West pinned Jordan Snyder in 2:54 to give the Wildcats a 25-19 lead.
An Athens forfeit at 182 tied the match, but the Wildcats moved back in front, at 28-25, on Pernaselli's 6-2 win over Zack Lash at 195.
Another Athens forfeit at 220 pounds put Tyrone ahead, the Wildcats re-gained the lead, at 34-31, on Braund's pin of Parker Allen in 2:29 in the 285-pound bout.
Korry Walls lifted the Golden Knights to the win with a 12-4 major decision in the match-closing 106-pound bout.
Athens 48, Trinity 27 Athens took advantage of a 24-point differential in forfeits to knock off Camp Hill-based Trinity High School in the seventh-place match.
After Kaden Setzer received a forfeit at 126 pounds to open the match, freshman Aidan Garcia pinned Zach Biller in 2:50 in the 132-pound bout to give the Wildcats a 12-0 lead.
Trinity got on the board with a technical fall at 132-pounds, but Jennings and Dorman received forfeits for the Wildcats at 138 and 145 pounds, respectively, to up their lead to 24-5.
Trinity's Dan Kosinski forged a 12-4 major decision over Stafursky at 152, but freshman Riley Hall received a forfeit at 160 to extend the Athens lead to 30-9.
After Jagger Gray's 5-2 win over West at 170, Trinity received back-to-back forfeit at 182 and 195 to cut the Wildcat lead to 30-24.
Christian Cirelli further cut into the lead with a 9-4 decision over Pernaselli at 220, but Braund scored a pin of Ryan Dalton in 1:40 at 285 pounds to lock up the win.
Kyler Setzer and Bradley received forfeits at 106 and 113, respectively, to provide the final margin.
Athens hosts Canton Tuesday night in a battle of NTL teams with unbeaten league records.
