ATHENS — Athens shut Wellsboro out in the final eight minutes, but its comeback attempt came up just short in a 21-20 loss here Saturday afternoon in NTL Large School junior varsity girls basketball action.
Wellsboro led 7-5 after the first quarter, and outscored Athens 8-0 in the second quarter to take a 15-5 lead into the halftime intermission.
Karlee Bartlow knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points in the third quarter as Athens trimmed one point off its deficit, and trailed 21-12 heading into the final eight minutes.
Hannah Blackman scored six points in the fourth quarter to fuel an 8-0 run, but Wellsboro, which was 0-for-3 from the free-throw line in the final eight minutes, held on for the win.
Bartlow led Athens with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Blackman added six points and nine boards, Emma Bronson contributed six rebounds, three steals, and two blocked shots, and Natalie Watson grabbed four rebounds.
Athens travels to Williamson Tuesday.
