HAMPTON, Va. - Athens grad
Brian Courtney, the starting 141-pounder for the University of Virginia, went 2-1 over the weekend to help nationally-ranked Cavaliers to a runner-up finish here at the Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum.
Virginia, ranked 22nd in the nation, opened the Duals with a 23-12 win over Kent State.
Courtney scored a 6-5 win over Corey Simpson to give the Cavaliers a 6-3 lead. They won four of the final six weight classes to pull away.
In the semifinals, Virginia won the first four weight classes, and seven of 10 in a 23-9 win over Old Dominion.
Courtney scored a 12-4 major decision over Sa'Derian Perry to give the Cavaliers a 10-0 lead.
In the finals, Rider, ranked 23rd in the nation, upended Virginia, 20-12.
Courtney dropped a 10-5 decision to Pete Lipari, which gave Lehigh a 6-3 lead.
With the match tied at 6-6, Rider took control with four straight wins.
Courtney is now 11-7 on the season with four pin falls
Virginia, now 5-2, returns to action this weekend with home matches against Chattanooga Friday night, and VMI Saturday afternoon.
