IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: FIRST-QUARTER RUN PROPELS WAVERLY IN 81-15 ROUT OF DRYDEN (2020-01-17)

WAVERLY - Waverly scored the first 19 points of the game, and cruised to an 81-15 win over Waverly here Friday night in IAC Large School Division girls basketball action.

Junior Sidney Tomasso scored 11 points in the first four minutes of the game, and freshman Kennedy Westbrook added four to help the Lady Wolverines to a 19-0 lead with 4:07 remaining in the first quarter.

Dryden got on the board with a free throw by Lauren Gullni with 2:08 remaining in the first quarter.

The Lady Purple Lions trimmed the deficit to 19-4, but senior Gretchen Sowle, and Westbrook drained 3-pointers in the final minute to give Waverly a 25-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Eight different Lady Wolverines put their name in the scoring column in a 17-4 second quarter run that extended their lead to 42-8 at the half.

Senior Gianna Picco and sophomore Olivia Nittinger each drained 3-pointers, and scored five points apiece, and senior Morgan Adams added four points to fuel a 26-7 third-quarter blitz that gave the Lady Wolverines a 68-15 lead entering the final eight minutes.

Tomasso led Waverly with 20 points, while Westbrook scored 11 points, Adams had 10 points, and Nittinger added nine points.

Picco scored eight points in the win, while senior Paige Lewis, junior Alyssa Sindoni, and Sowle scored six points apiece, and sophomore Lourden Benjamin chipped in with five points.

Gullni led Dryden with seven points.

Waverly, now 9-2, returns to action Friday at Whitney Point.
