WYALUSING "” Athens got off to a hot start, but went ice cold through the middle two quarters in a 40-34 loss to Wyalusing here Friday night in NTL junior varsity boys basketball action.

Jonathan Smith and Lucas Kraft scored seven points apiece, with both hitting one 3-pointer, in the first quarter, and Ryan Thompson also knocked down a 3-pointer to fuel a 17-5 Athens blitz in the first eight minutes.

Carson Smith canned a 3-pointer in the second quarter, but it was the junior Wildcats' only bucket in the middle 16 minutes as Wyalusing outscored them 30-3 to take a 35-20 into the final eight minutes.

Athens made a run in the fourth quarter, with Carson Smith and Thompson scoring five points apiece, and Jonathan Smith adding four points, but came up short as Blake Morningstar made three of five free throws down the stretch to seal the win for Wyalusing.

Jonathan Smith led Athens will 11 points, while Carson Smith and Thompson added eight points apiece, and Kraft chipped in with seven points. Carson Smith and Thompson knocked down two 3-pointers apiece.

Morningstar led Wyalusing with 14 points and Hunter Moss added 12.

Athens returns to action Tuesday at Troy.
